Ms Carol Yeung, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of TOYP Selection 2019, announced, “The Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (JCIHK) announced that nominations for the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2019 (TOYP Selection 2019) open today until July 15. This year’s selection, themed with “Ignite Passion & Reach Beyond”, gives formal recognition to young Hongkongers who strove for their dreams while keeping the original aspiration and make their reputation abroad.”

The TOYP Selection is hosted by JCIHK, and this year marks its 47th edition. As of today, 367 Outstanding Young Persons from different sectors have been selected. The honorary patron of this edition is the Hon Cheung Kin-chung, GBM, GBS, JP, the Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong. The chairperson of the Organizing Committee of TOYP Selection 2019 announced the Judging Panel of the TOYP Selection during the Kick Off Ceremony and Cocktail Reception today. The independent Judging Panel, made up of five professionals from different sectors, includes the Chief Judge Dr Pang Yiu-kai, and other members namely Prof Chan Ka-keung, GBS, JP, Dr Ko Wing-man GBS, JP, Ms Mok Fung-yee, MH, JP, and Mr Francis Ngai.

Dr Pang, GBS, JP, the Chief Judge of TOYP Selection 2019 Judging Panel, a 1999 TOYP awardee, Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, and the Deputy Managing Director of Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited said, “We hope to see more Hong Kong stories that stand out in the world. Here I call for nominations from different sectors to identify young people who are striving for their future while keeping the original aspiration. This year, the Judging Panel comprises five members from various professional sectors including political and business circles. Under the principle of being professional, independent, equitable and fair, the Judging Panel will select this year’s TOYP based on the candidates’ outstanding performances in their working and professional areas, as well as their contributions to the society.” He added that TOYP accepts nominations under five categories: “Civil and Social Services”, “Commerce and Industry”, “Education”, “Performing Arts/Sports/Culture and Arts” and “Professionals. All nominations are first screened by the Selection Consultant. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Judging Panel.

Ms Sherry Tsai, a professional Hong Kong swimmer turned coach and a 2014 TOYP awardeesaid, “Being an athlete who once held 18 Hong Kong record was my greatest achievement. Besides, my silver medal won in the World Youth Games was a zero to breakthrough for Hong Kong athletes. Now I have become the head coach in Stanford Swim School to train a number of young swimmers. I hope one day they can win international awards and bring pride to our city.”

Indian Hongkonger stand-up comedian and 2018 TOYP awardee Mr Vivek Mahbubani, said, “If an Indian can become a Cantonese stand-up comedian in Hong Kong and even an Outstanding Youth Person, what is your excuse for not pursuing your dreams? Believe in yourself! I don't think your dreams would be crazier than mine. Hongkongers need more laughter! I hope to bring hope to the people through stand-up comedy. I also hope that the stories of TOYPs can allow Hongkongers to know themselves better.”

Mr Calvin Chiu Man-kit, Chairman of The Outstanding Young Persons’ Association and Chairperson of the Against Elderly Abuse of Hong Kong, said, “Hong Kong is all about creativity and I pay heed to it when I run my social enterprise restaurant. Many restaurants buy dim-sums from food factories. Customers visit different restaurants, but they may be having dim-sums provided by the same supplier. If we can offer traditional but less common dim- ums, such as “chicken buns”, “deepfried taro dumplings”, and “sesame rolls”, the dim-sums may turn popular among Hong Kong people. However, the chefs who can make them are getting old. Currently, all staff in my restaurant are senior citizens, including those who cook and those who serve. Although the employees’ compensation insurance for seniors is more expensive, we can benefit from their rich experience, especially the ability to design special menu for diabetic patients.”

On top of the details of the Selection, including the list of Judging Panel, the debut of this year’s promotional video was unveiled at the Kick off Ceremony by TOYP 2019 Organizing Committee. The video, starring Canto-pop star and actress Miriam Yeung Chin-wah 楊千嬅 (2005 TOYP Awardee), features inspiring real-life stories of six Outstanding Young Persons across different generations, who progressed towards their goals with dedication and commitment, and made their reputation abroad. “TOYP’s stories allow Hongkongers to know themselves better. The future of Hong Kong depends on every one of you.” said Ms Carol Yeung, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of TOYP Selection 2019.

The six inspiring stories in the kick off video for TOYP2019 (https://youtu.be/T0l1VWwYsQs), includes,
Chong Chan-yau, president of the Hong Kong Blind Union, 1991 TOYP Awardee), Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai, former Hong Kong Swimming team’s member (2014 TOYP Awardee), David Yeung, the Founder & CEO of Green Monday (2015 TOYP Awardee), Jason Yip, former programme manager at the International Committee of the Red Cross (2018 TOYP Awardee), Dr Chong Shuk Ching, Clinical Professional Co nsultant, Department of Paediatrics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2018 TOYP Awardee), and Miriam Yeung Chin-wah, Canto-pop star and actress (2005 TOYP Awardee).

Mr Zenith Lin, the National President of JCI Hong Kong, said, “This year, TOYP Selection is themed with ‘Ignite Passion & Reach Beyond’ to encourage young Hongkongers to strive for their dreams. This year’s themed background, designed by the Organizing committee, uses the Victoria Harbour and helium balloons to illustrate the idea of the moving stories of Hong Kong, carried by the balloons, travelling further afield from the city centre.”
